Project overview
Creative re-use, turned into a nurturing learning environment
New City College with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities, a dedicated centre at the Ardleigh Green campus. We converted an existing ground floor science block into a SEN centre, with the primary aim to provide a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
The project has seen the existing building reconfigured, a prime example of the importance of creative re-use in the built environment.
Scope and delivery
What the centre includes
The science block's existing shell was kept and reconfigured around how the centre actually teaches, rather than rebuilt from scratch.
Entrance and reception
A new primary entrance and reception, giving the centre its own front door and identity within the wider campus.
Sensory room
A dedicated sensory room fitted with specialist acoustic ceiling panels, designed to be calm and controllable.
Ten general classrooms
Ten general purpose classrooms formed out of the old science block layout, alongside an IT classroom.
Kitchen classroom and life skills studio
Practical teaching spaces, including a kitchen classroom and a life skills studio for independent living skills.
Support and meeting rooms
Speech and Language and Job Coaching meeting rooms, plus ancillary offices and storage for the teaching team.
